Donut's History

Donut's History

Few people can resist the temptation of tasting these delicious desserts that for decades have sweetened the palate of millions of people, it seems like among its ingredients were included the nectar of the gods.
It is difficult to know exactly who was responsible of creating these sweet wonders we  call donuts; however, it is said that they have theirs origin in Holland where they were known under the name of "olykoeks" or "oil cakes," which were nothing more than dumplings fried in lard which people used to filled with fruits, nuts or other fillers that do not require cooking to prevent the center remained uncooked. This was until Hansen Gregory, an american ship captain, finds another solution and instead fill them, decides to make a hole in the center of the donut so that it could be cooked completely, changing the typical Dutch "oil cake".
However, today we can find a wide variety of flavors and designs where we can see either with or without hole, glazed, unfilled or filled with chocolate, caramel, jams, puddings... in short, many options to choose from.
An interesting point about the donuts, is that they are constantly related to the cops (especially in the United States), and I'm sure you have seen it reflected again and again as in movies and television series as in speeches and jokes . Have you ever wondered why this? Well, it is not something that can be said with certainty, but it is said that is not  only because they are very delicious but also they used to be very cheap and the places where they were sold, were the first to open and the last to close, allowing them to let  the cops giving themselves a midnight taste without spending much money.

White Nights-St.Petersburgo (Russia)

White Nights - St. Pertesburgo (Russia)

One of the countries I have always wanted to visit is Russia, and as I know more of this country, my desire to step on Russian soil, increases.
Sometimes, in my leisure time, I usually sit with my tablet to surf the Internet and read articles, view images, videos, listen to different music I normally listen; and I pass the hours acquiring new knowledge of different subjects. A few days ago, I came across a new topic that caught my attention: "White Nights"; so I opened the searcher and I started reading about this topic that I want to share with you today.

White nights are an atmospheric phenomenon that occurs during the night of the summer solstice. In Venezuela, we experience solstices summers with longer days, that is, in ordinary days, at 6:30 pm the sun has already set, while in days of summer solstice, the sun takes a little longer to do so. However, there are places where the sun simply refuses to hide and remains in the sky for much longer, thus avoiding nocturnal darkness arrives. Such is the case of St. Petersburg, a Russian city that for being a city  situated more at the north of the world than others, experiences about a month and a half in which the greater star does not pass below the horizon so the sky does not get full darkness. This occurs among the months of May, June and July.

During these days, the habitants of the city along with the tourists who visit it, perform multiple nighttime activities ranging from walking along the banks of the river admiring the fantastic beauty of a city that does not turn on the lights of its lampposts and whose restaurants remain open in broad daylight in the midnight, to attend the White Night Festival where they can enjoy the best of classical music, opera, ballet, theater, choreography and more; which not only take place in the majestic Mariinsky and Hermitage theaters (which are the main attractions), but the whole city comes alive with live music, opera, and dance in small theaters, parks and playgrounds. Even students have the joy of culminating the school year during these days, and what better way to celebrate than with these exciting holidays?
For people who enjoy atmospheric phenomenons and also like Russia, or simply meet and discover new horizons, St. Petersburg during the summer solstice is undoubtedly one of the destinations that must be added to their travel schedule.
