Smelling Screen Television

Smelling Screen Television

Inventions like "Tome Theater" and "3D Glasses" are a clear demonstration that people like to feel that they form part of the scenes they are watching in front of a screen; but, have you ever imagine the possibility of smelling the aroma of a delicious dish transmitted by a TV program while you enjoy the comfort of your couch? Technology bets to achieve it.
A team of researchers from the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, have developed a prototype smelling screen which release scents when an image of an aromatic object is shown.

How does it work?

The system has four fans located in each corner of the screen. The scents are produced by introducing odor vapor pellets into the four fans that vaporized the pellets and blow them into place. Besides, the screen has been perfectly designed in a way that the airstream of the fans can be adjusted so that, people perceive the odor as emanating from a specific place of the screen. It means that if a cup of coffee appears at the bottom corner of the screen, it seems like the odor is coming from the same spot.

Undoubtedly, it is an amazing experiment. However, the Smelling Screen is so far of being commercialized due to there are not enough people disposed to pay for a television that release odor.

What do you think? Would you like to have a TV like this?

  1. What an amazing invention! It would be great to smell the aroma of each thing we see on the tv, but of course the best things for me will be the food although living in Venezuela, if you are getting from work or the university with hungry and turn on the tv and found that maybe you could die hahaha! But it's a perfect inventiong I would bought it just to taste the smell of food that I never tasted or food that I couldn't buy. Finally I will combine this experiment with a fast delivery to make it perfect!

  2. Ambitious projects like this one just prove that technology will eventually reach levels beyond comprehension.

A century ago, who would've thought of an artifact that could display images from antennas and satellites in real time? In color? With a surround sound? Certainly, this project would come as shock for many people in this day and age, and that's a big statement given how far technology has come up until now.

Being a huge fan of the Food Network, I can honestly say that, as much I'd like to live the experience this TV has to offer, I at least expect it to have a "disable feature" button. I get tortured enough just by the images, I can't imagine if, on top of that, I had to smell the food I can't eat. That's just rude.

  4. Loved reading about this! There's always something going on in our world that astonoshed me, and when it comes to humans and their adventurous projects, I'm always down for it (if it dosen't cause any pain to anyone). Yet, here's my point of view about this!

I think that it could be a wonderful experience if we would be able to smell what on cuisine shows extraordinary chefs cook! I mean, I think that, you've seen too TV programms like Masterchef or Hell's Kitchen (the last one do not really caught my attention but food is cooked, it counts too! Ha!), and whilst looking at the plates and how colorful and divine they should taste (and you can actually feel the texture on your tongue, even though you've never tasted them), have wondered "How it smells?". As food lovers this new technology can lead us to have that 360° experience that we have always dreamt about, and I do really fancy the fact that people are developing ideas like this one!

Yet, I think that unwished for occurences will happen, and that event could lead my position to go aganist this type of idea to be sold and put on the market. Nevertheless, as I'm a huge supporter of innovation, in almost all its forms, I think that we need to design more things like this to improve our knowledge, and so to improve our society!

Every day you learn something new! Thanks for your article! Hope to read more of this incredible material!
